About Clarice Turner
Clarice Turner has decades of meaningful experience with small to medium sized family business, always with the thread of wine. As President of Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Clarice is responsible for leading strategy, structure and culture for sustained profitability and future growth, while nurturing the next generation of this iconic winery’s family owners. Clarice serves on multiple boards including the advisory board of directors of Delicato Family Vineyards, the Society of Fellows of the Culinary Institute of America, and the advisory board for Women of the Vine & Spirits. She is an avid wine collector and ninth generation Northern Californian. Clarice and her husband reside in Napa and have two children.
In 1974 Joe Phelps had the idea to make a separate cuvee each year, one that would represent the finest wine he could make from each vintage. He didn’t necessarily think it would always be a Cabernet Sauvignon. His only thought was to make one wine that represented the best of what Joseph Phelps Vineyards could produce each year. He decided to name the wine Insignia, a proprietary name that would give him the flexibility to make the wine out of any varietal he chose.
As it happened, 1974 was a great year for Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley and the 1974 Insignia was 94% Cabernet from the Stags Leap District. The following year Merlot dominated the blend, and in 1976, it returned to Cabernet, this time from the Eisele Vineyard. It was becoming increasingly clear that red Bordeaux varieties – particularly Cabernet Sauvignon - were ideally suited to Napa Valley and would consistently yield the best wines of the vintage. From 1977 on, Cabernet Sauvignon was never less than 50% of the Insignia blend and gradually became the dominant varietal. Joe’s vision evolved: Insignia would always be a proprietary red Bordeaux-style blend.
About Joseph Phelps Winery
“Not a grape on the property. Lots of nice-looking cattle.”
That’s how Joe Phelps – our father, our grandfather – recollected his first encounter with the Napa Valley property that would become the home of Joseph Phelps Vineyards. It was well over 600 acres, more land than he originally intended to develop, but when he saw it, he fell in love. Its oak-studded hills and golden valleys spoke to the Colorado-bred farm boy in him.
Joe had been looking for a place to make a little wine. In his years since the Navy he’d grown his father’s Greeley, Colorado-based construction business into a multi-state powerhouse, expanding to northern California in the mid-1960s to work on bridge and dam projects and the infrastructure for BART. Wine was a fast-growing side interest, something he’d developed a taste for in college. He began collecting, and even did some home winemaking in Greeley using grapes shipped by air overnight from Napa.
“When my dad began Joseph Phelps Vineyards in 1973 he did so with a very long term view and long term approach. He knew that in order to create the best wines possible he had to have tremendous dedication, attention to detail and passion."
– Bill Phelps, Joe’s son.
In time, Joe’s work in California and his interest in wine merged, leading to connections with growers and winemakers in Napa Valley and a contract to build the Souverain Winery. It wasn’t long before the idea of starting his own winery took hold. A trip to Italy in 1970 clinched it, and Joe began looking for property in Napa Valley
