Brunello di Montalcino is a red DOCG Italian wine produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montalcino located about 80 km south of Florence in the Tuscany wine region. Brunello, a diminutive of Bruno ("brown"), is the name that was given locally to what was believed to be an individual grape variety grown in Montalcino. In 1879 the Province of Siena's Amphelographic Commission determined, after a few years of controlled experiments, that Sangiovese and Brunello were the same grape variety, and that the former should be its designated name. In Montalcino the name Brunello evolved into the designation of the wine produced with 100% Sangiovese.
In 1980, Brunello di Montalcino was among the four wines awarded the first Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) designation. Today it is one of Italy's best-known and most expensive wines.
About the Restaurant
This is a legendary restaurant, hidden in the hills below Santa Monica. A favorite with celebrities and Italian Rock Stars. Chef Baldi did things his way - incredible sauces - authentic ingredients - this place does it all very well. The room we will use is a private bungalow that is perfect for our small dinner group.
About the Dinner
The list of wines, a vertical, is valued over $3000. It is our intension to sell out this dinner and open every bottle. If fewer people sign up, we open fewer bottles but we have larger pours… You will get the same size/amount of wine no matter what. About 1 bottle of wine per person. To dine on your own at this restaurant with bottle of Brunello off this list. It would cost you about the same, but here you get an insane list of collectable wines. Many were the top rated efforts of their vintage.
All wines will be tasted in vertical order, starting with the younger wines and getting older as the night progresses.
